E-Learning Task 2.1 (10 points)

Have a look at this article about the pharmaceutical industry: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/18/opinion/coronavirus-vaccine-cost.html

Define the industry your innovation project belongs to and find at least one good article about "your industry". Summarise the article in approximately five sentences and then go on to describe "your" industry in more detail, mentioning at least 5 interesting facts about it.

This task can be completed by one or more members of your group (if there are more participants, let me know and all of you will get points, but please be honest :) (as always :)).

Have a nice evening!

Kind regards

Dagmar

    https://www.sciencealert.com/trials-begin-on-new-waterless-toilet-that-can-turn-human-waste-into-power

According to David Nield in “This New Waterless Toilet Can Turn Human Waste Into Power” scientists in the UK have designed a new cheap, waterless and energy-producing toilet. This so-called Nano Membrane Toilet is environmentally friendly and easy to maintain. Various processes take place inside the toilet, whereby on the one hand liquid is separated from the rest of the waste and on the other hand the waste residues are burned. This results in water that can be used for household laundry or field irrigation on the one hand and fertilizer on the other. The thermal energy generated during the combustion process can be converted into electricity.

The product innovation of my team refers to a pit toilet that generates electricity from human excrement and at the same time reduces the amount of faeces.

The human excrement is very rich in energy due to its high content of organic material. If bacteria are added, they decompose the complex organic molecules contained in it into combustible gases (biogases such as methane). Researchers from the Institute for Water, Environment and Health at UN University have calculated the following:

If the faeces excreted each year by all people were used as the source material for biogas, enough energy could be generated to cover the annual electricity needs of 138 million households.
However, instead of recovering and using this energy, large amounts of energy are used every year to "destroy" this enormous potential in a targeted manner at our wastewater treatment plants.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/01/realestate/coronavirus-rearrange-furniture.html?searchResultPosition=1

The article "Too Much Time on Your Hands? Try Rearranging the Furniture" by Ronda Kaysen and Michelle Higgins is about using the time to rearrange the furniture in your home during the Corona crisis. It was published in: “The New York Times” on the 1st of April this year.
From the authors’ view the corona crisis is a good opportunity to rearrange the furniture at home. It doesn’t cost any money, you don’t have to leave the house and it can make you even feel therapeutic.
First you should consider whether the current furniture arrangement still makes sense.
Then helpful advices are given on how to design a room sensibly. You should start with a focal point, an obvious element, like a picture, a window, a fireplace or the biggest piece of furniture. Then move the things around to see how it works best.
By doing this you should make sure to coordinate colours and materials to keep it cohesive. To ensure that you leave enough space to move comfortably between all pieces of furniture, there are even suggestions for distances. Apart from that, one should always consider to add interest to a room, by making sure your furnishings are different height.
In principle, these general rules should not be followed too strictly, so as not to destroy the cosy home.

Five interesting facts about height-adjustable desks:
1.) SPARES SPINE, ANKLES & KNEES:
A height-adjustable desk is also a contemporary and ergonomic solution when it comes to spine, ankles and knees. Because breaking through the sitting period not only keeps body and soul on their toes throughout the entire working day, it also keeps you healthier in the long term, as the spine, ankles and knees are significantly spared. Complaints in the back, neck and shoulder areas as well as in the joints are quickly reduced with a stand-sit table, making the workplace more ergonomic. Acute back problems, which are becoming more and more common nowadays even at a young age, can be caused by stress, psychological problems or very often the wrong posture. Stand-sit solutions can help here!

2:) PROVIDES UP TO 20 % MORE BRAIN POWER:
Often there are situations in everyday work where important decisions have to be made quickly. Ideally, the mind should be awake and concentrated in order to be able to react quickly. According to experts, human brain activity increases by up to 20% when standing, which ensures much faster, higher quality decision-making, even at the end of a long, stressful working day. So it helps not to spend the whole working day in a tiring sitting position and to get up regularly to get the brain working at full speed. A standing/sitting desk is therefore a great advantage if you need to work in a highly concentrated way for many hours. In addition, a height-adjustable desk generally makes employees generally fitter, more open-minded and more flexible.

3.) SAVES MONEY IN THE LONG TERM:
If your employees can concentrate fully on their work because they are not constantly distracted by fatigue, neck tension or back pain, they will work faster. This benefits both the employees and the company: According to a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering in Stuttgart, German companies suffer annual losses of 35 million euros due to absenteeism caused by back problems and reduced productivity alone. Reduced absenteeism due to better employee health therefore also serves the economic efficiency of a company. Take action and invest in height-adjustable desks, because you can save money in the long run.

    4.) BRINGS MORE MOTIVATION:
Less constant strain leads to less stress, frustration and chronic pain, which in turn creates more motivation at work. If an employee feels healthier and fitter, progresses quickly and achieves what he or she has set out to do, then he or she will also have more fun at work and will be able to create more ideas and concepts accordingly and implement them with motivation. More exercise by getting up regularly therefore leads to more employee satisfaction and efficiency.

    5.) PREVENTS OVERWEIGHT:
While sitting, the human body uses only about 1 kcal per minute. Parallel to this, leg activity decreases. In comparison, during a walk in the lunch break the body consumes at least three times as many calories as when sitting, which is why occasional getting up and movement phases are more than recommended. Stand-sit tables are perfect for this: by changing the position without having to interrupt work constantly for long periods of time. In this way you can prevent overweight and at the same time be more efficient.

    article link: https://www.marketsandmarkets.com/Market-Reports/Motion-Sensor-Market-614.html

    Article Summary:
The article "Motion Sensor Market" published on December 02, 2019, deals with the future of the motion sensor industry.
Furthermore, the article describes that the market for these sensors will grow strongly in the next years. Hi Dagmar,

This is the post for Task 2.1 from Michael, Jakob and me.

    Article with summary: https://www.worldwildlife.org/magazine/issues/fall-2018/articles/preventing-food-waste

The article from Jane Black deals with a project of the Elemtary School in Washington DC to reduce food waste. Landfill waste has been reduced by about 50% by installing dustbins to facilitate waste separation and a table for unused food that students make available to others when they want something more.
A third of the world's food - 1.3 billion tons - is lost or wasted, costing $750 billion a year. Food production is the main threat to biodiversity, which is why it is so important that only what is eaten is produced.
Food is wasted for convenience, abundance and cosmetic perfection.
In America, 40% of food is thrown away, but on the other hand, 42 million complain about not having enough to eat.
The Fairmont Hotel in Washington DC participated in a pilot project to reduce food waste. The waste was weighed, or food was given to those in need. In this way, 10% waste was saved, which at first glance doesn't sound like much, but if entire hotel chains participate, it has a big impact.
Furthermore, WWF is working on avoiding food waste and losses from the outset and on rethinking what is really needed.

    5 facts about our industry
Our industry is the food waste reducing industry. Most people think that this is not a real industry but based on the actual facts and figures we can say that this is a bigger problem than most people think. As you can see in the summary of the article, this is a real problem and the money wasted is higher than most people know.

But let the numbers speak for themselves:
A third of the world's food is lost or wasted
About 750 billion dollars are lost within one year
In every Austrian household, food with a value of € 300 will be thrown away each year
In Austria, we have a food waste of 1.17 billion per year
In Austria, the unnecessary food waste is about 157,000 tons per year

That's why we want to develop an app that solves this problem, so that we can make the world more efficient and save our resources and our environment in a sustainable way.

    Kind Regards
    Christoph, Jakob, Michael

    our task below.

    Article: https://medium.com/medicohealth/the-current-situation-in-the-health-care-industry-and-issues-it-is-facing-7daf15cd503f
    Summary:
The article summarizes the difficulties and trends that are occurring in the healthcare industry. Although the healthcare industry is one of the largest industries in the world, it also suffers from financial problems caused by regulations and operational difficulties.
It is mentioned that there is an increasing trend towards ageing and older people need more health services, which is why we also believe that our product has a large market.
It is mentioned that products in the medical field are developing very quickly because there is a lot of research, but at the same time, there are still great differences in access to the health system around the world. In addition, a larger number of healthcare workers are needed to meet real needs.
Another problem they face is a digitisation and the security of personal data because it must be guaranteed that personal information is stored privately and securely.

    Facts:
That there is no product of this kind on the European market yet.
In total, 36% of Vienna's senior citizens live alone, i.e. in senior single households.
16% of 65 to 74-year-olds take five or more medications, women slightly more often than men.
Around a quarter of the over 74-year-olds take five or more medications, women slightly more than men.
In Germany, 58,000 people die every year as a result of the wrong medication and its mix among themselves.

    Kind regards
